Mining algorithm: X11
The X11 algorithm, introduced with the launch of Dash (originally known as “Xcoin”) in January 2014, is a unique cryptographic hash function used for mining cryptocurrencies. Created by Evan Duffield, X11 is notable for its use of a chain of 11 different hash functions, making it one of the more complex and secure cryptographic hashes used by modern cryptocurrencies.
The design of X11 was influenced by the chained-hashing approach of Quark, but it adds further complexity by using a predetermined sequence of 11 hash functions. These functions include Blake, BMW, Groestl, JH, Keccak, Skein, Luffa, Cubehash, Shavite, Simd, and Echo. The complexity and depth of X11 initially prevented the effective use of ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) miners, although it was always anticipated by Duffield that ASIC devices for X11 would eventually be developed.
X11 was particularly well-received in the mining community for its energy efficiency when mining with home rigs. Despite the emergence of ASIC miners for X11, mining coins using this algorithm remains profitable and can still be performed using GPUs.
X11’s introduction aimed to address concerns about the centralization risks associated with simpler algorithms like SHA-256, used by Bitcoin. The multiple rounds of hashing in X11 increase security against potential attacks and hacking attempts. The inclusion of all X11 hash functions in the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) competition for developing the SHA-3 standard underscores their security and credibility.
Cryptocurrencies that use the X11 algorithm include Dash, Hatch, Pura, SmartCoin, CannabisCoin, Influxcoin, StartCoin, Onix, Sibcoin, Cream, ArcticCoin, Polis, and Quebecoin. The X11 mining process is characterized by its efficiency in terms of performance, lower electricity costs, and the value of the altcoins mined. X11 remains a significant and secure choice for cryptocurrency mining, offering a balance between security, energy efficiency, and accessibility for miners.
Below, you will find various hardware to mine cryptocurrencies secured with X11.
